Situational awareness relies on human skills, training, and experience – supported by technology. Having reliable coverage and being able to communicate and share observations up and down the chain of command supports situational awareness. New digital tools like drones and thermal imaging cameras can provide further information to the big picture and transform the way firefighters work and train. But fire chiefs looking to add these new digital capabilities to their departments would do well to acquaint themselves with the critical communications infrastructure they need.
