Blog-SMN Athens – getting closer to 100% uptime by reducing the hardware complexity of network diversity  

Much of the talk at the most recent SMN conference was about how to build up a case that places network diversity as the solution for the fragmented maritime satcom landscape. Participants explored how to deploy a strategic and systematic approach to network diversity and make sense of a maritime satcom world with new levels of service choice.

Everyone recognizes the clear benefits of smart ships when leveraging connected digital applications to e.g., optimize operations, improve crew welfare, and reduce emissions. But these applications produce a lot of data. The satellite industry and maritime users are still struggling to learn how to cope with it.

The solution will come from a more operationally specific, granular approach. It’s important for vessel owners to understand the applications in use and assess the criticality of each. For example, how much risk would there be if these applications were down due to the vessel going dark or crew leaving and taking operational knowledge with them?

From here, it’s possible to build out the applications that drive connectivity requirements, and place an order on their criticality in terms of developing a strategic approach to connectivity:  

1. Safety & Security: GMDSS, medical applications, piracy alerts, citadel solutions
2. Vessel Operations: Noon reports, port documentation, bill of lading, crew lists, vessel email, IP telephony
3. Business Critical: ERP system 
4. Vessel Optimisation: IoT Data e.g., monitoring of shaft power, emissions and ballast water
5. Crew Welfare: Internet access with own devices.

Once the above categories are understood, along with their data consumption and bandwidth requirements, the next step is to review the connectivity services available that best suit the needs of each category:

1. Safety & Security: L-Band is the most reliable frequency range as it is resilient to weather and has the highest global availability. Future maritime safety terminals will incorporate voice & data as part of a GMDSS solution
2. Vessel Operations: Primarily accommodated by VSAT solutions with L-Band as a back-up
3. Business Critical: VSAT for higher data usage applications including Teams or procurement systems
4. Vessel Optimization: ships use VSAT for connecting with cloud-based solutions with data loads impacting other applications, introducing the need for better data management
5. Crew Welfare: The biggest driver of data consumption on-board, though new satellite services are helping to accommodate demand.

The use of LTE/in-port Wi-Fi and any of the above applications is also worth exploring, as high-performance local services can reduce the load on other services. With the right hardware, integrating multiple bearers is easy, driving optimized performance and ultimately more bandwidth.

If a vessel or fleet simply subscribes to multiple satellite services to cover all applications, the data needs can be met. Multiple antennas would be required of course. But there are several challenges to consider before looking at what connectivity to put on-board:
- Coverage: Do the vessels or fleet operate globally or regional, will there be black spots?
- Availability: Is there proven network reliability and resilience to weather conditions? 
- Congestion: Is there a lot of maritime traffic in the area of operations? 
- Latency: Is real-time data or communication without lag important? 

Once all the above is understood, the suitable connectivity technology that meets the requirements of the specific customer vessel or fleet can be selected. There is clearly a need for service providers to offer network diversity to meet a well thought out multi-channel communications strategy based on the above criteria. 

One subscription regardless of service type is likely to be the point of singularity within maritime satcoms. And while there is talk of this being possible from the service provider standpoint, the industry still needs diversity in the maritime antenna market to make the physical link to different satellites that could be operating in any established orbit or communications frequency band.

This was one of the drivers behind the development of the latest generation SAILOR XTR and Sea Tel VSAT antenna systems and is reflected in the depth of variants in the Cobham Satcom portfolio. Take the new SAILOR XTR technology platform as an example. While antennas of varied sizes operating on various frequency bands with satellites in LEO, MEO and GEO give service providers choice, it is also essential to work with satellite owners to ensure complete, and seamless compatibility with their networks.

Cobham Satcom continues to do just this as part of the ongoing development of a single technology platform for different frequency bands, orbits and satellite networks. The goal being to simplify the hardware strategy needed to get as close to 100% connectivity uptime as its possible to get from services available right now, and in the future.

External-Hybrid Connectivity- SMN Rotterdam Roundtable Takeaways

Thank you to all the participants of the hybrid connectivity roundtable at the Smart Maritime Network Conference, Rotterdam. The discussion focused on how hybrid connectivity will impact maritime operations. We had a great mix of ship operators, shipbuilders, satellite operators, service providers and hardware manufacturers.
From the ship operator’s perspective, the demand is clear – shoreside-like connectivity, with high-quality data, available 100% of the time. With enhanced IoT monitoring onboard providing insights on all aspects of ship operations, having standardized data in a readable and tangible format is key. This is one of the drivers for always-on connectivity. With increased monitoring, we can see that connectivity downtime can have a high direct impact on costs and efficiency.

Providing 100% connectivity uptime across the oceans of the world, where ships connect to a satellite anywhere from 66km to 34,000km in orbit, is a huge challenge that satellite operators face. It is well understood that there are currently geographical limits to satellite connectivity and “black spots” for any technology. As digitalization increases, downtime of any sort will have to be overcome.   
4G/5G connectivity can help fill in the gaps and provide high-speed, low latency connectivity. However, there is a cost associated with this – a global flat rate fee is not available, so using this connectivity method is only viable when used in a cost-effective manner.
The other challenge is using the appropriate technology for each vessel’s unique operating profile. Take dredgers operating in coastal locations for example. 4G/5G is the primary communications technology but as they move to projects further offshore, or when operating in transit, satellite becomes the only option.
There are also question marks regarding the quality and reliability of a 4G/5G network, continued geographic challenges with the location of shoreside cell towers, and issues as SIM providers receive priority access when roaming.

Looking at the dredgers from the shipyard’s perspective, they need to monitor the vessels remotely from a warranty checking standpoint, so having always-on connectivity is vital to avoiding complex warranty claims. Again, not having access to data when needed could present a real tangible cost.
The question of bandwidth is simple, people want more, and LEO network constellations look sure to provide it. This, coupled with lower latency, can provide vessel operators with the shoreside-like connectivity required to support their digitalization efforts at sea. There is still some way to go in proving the reliability and availability of these services, but they will be important to digitalization.  

In summary there is not one solution that can provide a vessels connectivity needs 100% of the time across the globes oceans. A multi-layered approach is required to achieve always on shoreside like connectivity. Having reliable hardware that can provide multiple connectivity services in a single unit will greatly assist vessel operators in further adopting hybrid connectivity and achieving the bandwidth & uptime required to accelerate digitalization. We will also see that connectivity downtime of any sort can have a direct impact on a vessels bottom line so having a multi-layered, hybrid approach, provides resilience.

Designed primarily for use on cruise ships and mega yachts, the 3.7 meter Sea Tel 370s TV is a groundbreaking solution designed to expand onboard access to the highest quality programming anywhere in the world, while significantly reducing lifetime technical costs.

The Sea Tel 370s TV leverages the newest generation Sea Tel Integrated Marine Electronics (IMA) platform, which is already proven in the world’s most flexible and powerful marine VSAT antenna systems. New technology helps unlock several advantages for cruise and yacht charter companies by automating the manual processes that have until now been needed to make some of the most popular television channels available globally at sea.

Cobham Satcom’s new flagship TVRO antenna features automatic C-band switching between circular and linear polarization, ensuring uninterrupted viewing and continuous availability of live television such as ESPN, which is one of the most popular cruise ship channels especially when major sporting tournaments are playing.

The introduction of the Sea Tel 370s TV advanced automatic switching alleviates the shipowner of having to undergo the costly and time-consuming work previously required when an engineer had to board the ship and manually convert antennas between circular and linear polarization when entering a new region served by incompatible satellites.

Further advances come from an innovative new technology that mitigates the recent phenomenon of 5G interference with satellite TV on board, when getting closer to land. Additionally, Cobham Satcom will be offering a feed upgrade which will be compatible with many of the existing Sea Tel 2.4 meter and 3.7 meter TVRO antennas already operating on cruise ships and mega yachts globally. The ability to upgrade these existing systems to the new Circular/Linear 5G filtered feed will save the customer considerable capital and operational expenditure.

**Cobham Satcom to Incorporate the Low-SWaP, Standards-Based OpenEdge 2500 Into Several of Its Antenna Ranges**

SAN DIEGO, April 06, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, Inc. When integrated into any antenna, the compact digitizer reliably converts radio frequency (RF) signals into Internet protocol (IP) data streams that are easily consumed for use in modern software-defined communications networks.

The OpenEdge 2500 enables digitization to occur natively within nearly any parabolic, electronically steerable, or flat panel antenna. Cobham Satcom, a leading global provider of satellite communications solutions to the land and maritime sectors, and the Digital IF Interoperability Consortium (DIFI), the independent space industry group formed to advance interoperability in satellite and ground system networks, today announced Cobham's membership in the DIFI Consortium.


**Copenhagen, Denmark - 3 February 2022** - Cobham Satcom, a leading global provider of satellite communications solutions to the land and maritime sectors, and the Digital IF Interoperability Consortium (DIFI), the independent space industry group formed to advance interoperability in satellite and ground system networks, today announced Cobham’s membership in the DIFI Consortium.


Cobham is a long-standing proponent of standard interfaces, reflected in modular designs and compatibility across a broad range of RF vendors, and has developed a range of digitizers and innovative digital interfaces. “We have strong relationships with many of the DIFI members, and as a leading terminal manufacturer we look forward to adding our experience and support”, noted Bob Potter, Cobham’s Engineering Director, “the Consortium and Standard reflect the strong desires of our user community, and we have long promoted standardization and enabling true interoperability.”

In August, DIFI introduced version 1.0 of its interoperability standard based upon VITA 49, entitled IEEE-ISTO Std 4900-2021: Digital IF Interoperability Standard, which can be downloaded at the Consortium’s website https://dificonsortium.org. This standard has already been specified in at least one major satellite communications RFI by the U.S. Army to support system interoperability.
